MapTac:
MapTac™ is a web-based tool that allows
emergency management personnel to plot the location of
forces/resources at or around an incident scene, at staging, or
other locations as necessary.

MapTac was created to replace or augment
static, paper-based maps or magnetic/light boards common in almost
every EOC. MapTac can be used with any GIS or mapping system that
can produce a static picture file (jpeg, gif, bmp). Existing
web-based mapping resources available on the internet, such as Yahoo
Maps, Delorme, etc., can be used to plot virtually any address, then
saved into MapTac to add icons such as roadblocks, fire trucks,
police units, etc. MapTac also allows responders at geographically
separate locations to view, and depending on user privileges, update
resources real time.
MapTac is not a mapping program. It is an
interface that uses any available web-based mapping program. Users
can select and scale an online map of their choosing, import the
file to MapTac, and plot resources that can then be viewed by anyone
with a browser. Like WebEOC status boards, MapTac can be projected
and viewed via a display system.
Components:
The above illustrates the major components of MapTac. These
include the map selection list, map view, marker palette and
configuration / display tools. The user interface
(non-administrative) provides access to the current map pick-list
and show label functions only.
Operation is fairly simple. Click on an icon
from the Marker Palette and the icon appears on the map file. Users
(with appropriate privileges) can then position and label icons as
they see fit. Users can place an icon representing the incident
scene, show the location of responding units, identify forces
assigned to staging, display road blocks, etc. You have the option
of showing individual icons for each unit, or one icon, properly
labeled, representing many units. With MapTac, users have the option
of showing labels associated with each icon, or hiding labels until
the cursor is placed over the icon.
